Overall it wasn't terrible, but there were multiple places where it worked up some tension, (like conflict between two women he likes), and then skips ahead to them being together for months.Resolving tensions is the interesting part of the story, don't just gut that part out!There were a couple places where dialogue did the same thing: " and she told some stories about their adventures and everyone was laughing, etc etc".Like his other books better, not sure why the quality seems to dip here so much.Didn't finish the book, stopped around halfway.
Having read this authors other more Conan-esk books I had thought I'd an idea of what to expect with this novel, but I was gloriously wrong. The magic of this book is both huge and encompassing of several varieties. But where this book shines is truly in the characters of the book. Our MC initially is a sort of country bumpkin but grows into a cross between Harry Potter and John McClane. His magical "helpers" all provide excellent caring for the MC but also go through excellent growth as well. However the author does a fantastic job of blending many evils into our villain. Political intrigue, corruption and the beginnings of revolution, and some excellently steamy and detailed adult scenes are all present in the story. One thing that I thought was interesting though is the flow of the story. It initially seems as the author is rushing the story but in a world of countless stories that seem to go on forever, our author is seeming to say here's the best of this story so the pacing is not detrimental to the book. Can't wait for the next novel in the series!!
I loved this book! The author has created a wonderful world filled with magic, elves, orcs, sorcerers, shape changers and of course you cannot forget to include that one character everyone wants to bury in the backyard.The storyline is one that pulls you into a world where magic is forbidden to some andencouraged for others. With a family trying to gain more power, comes evil deeds that must be answered for, and a plot that twists and turns a few times before dumping you out of your chair. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!
Tal has always wanted to be a sorcerer, so when he gets the opportunity to go, nothing is going to stand in his way. But this exam might be a killer with one student ready to do anything to cheat his way to the top. Lots of great characters, and an interesting main character who has to work his way to the top. A little Harry Potter, and a little Leisure suit Larry.
Tal has always wanted to be a wizard. The academy that trains wizards is about to make his wish come true. Good story line and characters, the author did a great job by moving the story along!
