Great hardcover book, with lots of pictures. Great details and lots of good information.
I don't write any reviews but I just had to for this one. It is a meticulously researched, beautifully crafted book that goes deep into the heart of the songs of Bruce Springsteen.For die hards who think they know everything there is to know about Bruce and his songs, there's plenty of new information about the recording and writing of them to make this worth purchasing.For anyone else who is a fan of Bruce, this book is nothing short of revelatory. It isn't filled with cheesy "meanings" of the songs. It's factual and engaging, and gives a well crafted insight into what inspired Bruce to write the songs, as well as really interesting information on how the songs were recorded, and the techniques Bruce used to in the studio to craft the sound of the song.It's also just physically gorgeous- it's beautifully bound and the photos inside follow the thread of Bruce's artistic, creative, and personal development.It is absolutely worth the listed price, and I would have paid double what I did for it, honestly.The only thing left to desire isn't on the behalf of the book or its' author- rather, it's on Bruce. Being reminded of the magic of his songs has just made it even more clear that we are overdue for a new album from the man. I can only hope that there's more left in the tank from him.5 stars, 10/10, a fantastic read. Thank you Brian Hiatt for your gorgeous testament to the work of this uniquely brilliant American artist. Loving the book thus far. I’ve read tons of Bruce bios and the like and here’s another great one to add to the collection. The research is exceptional!
This book is phenomenal. I can't believe a hardcover book with so many photos costs so little. I've only had it for a few days, but I'm almost done. I find myself reading it in order, then jumping around, which will definitely keep me coming back. I can see myself making playlists and then reading each essay while listening. I've been a fan of Hiatt's writing and podcast for a while; I don't know when he had time to write this! Honestly, this is a MUST for any Boss fan, and I will probably buy 3-4 more copies for family members.
This book is a MUST for Springsteen fans. As founder of the Spring-Nuts group on FB, there has been over a hundred people in my group alone who purchased this book and we are all raving over it. Brian Hiatt hit a homerun on this one. We all know the songs. And now we know the stories behind it. As someone who likes to write about Springsteen, this book is like the Springsteen Discography Bible!! Well written, beautiful presentation, awesome photos and mesmerizing stories. A ++++
I've been a Bruce Springsteen fan for over half my life. I got into him during the lull between Human Touch/Lucky Town and The Ghost of Tom Joad. This gave me ample time to scour Springsteen's back catalog, starting with Nebraska, then Tunnel of Love, then everything else, all at once.A lot of that back catalog has been covered; books like Glory Days and Springsteen's own Born to Run tend to focus on the years between Springsteen's origin story and the Brucemania of the 80s. Coverage drops off precipitously after that, despite Springsteen's return to massive popularity with The Rising and beyond. This book rectifies that, giving ample time to Springsteen's well-trod history and shining some light on newer work and recordings that have gotten lost in the shuffle of an epic career.Hiatt digs deep into what makes the early songs so significant, offering backstory and the occasional technical note. Through an impressive array of interviews with band members, engineers, and more, he's able to shade these stories with information and expertise from all sides ... even if some memories don't always match up to others. Casual fans will be impressed by the full sweep of Bruce Springsteen's career; hardcore aficionados will find so much unearth history to pore over and discuss, it's like discovering these songs anew.For someone who came into the Springsteen "thing" later in the game, a book like this is necessary. I love how later work - especially controversial work like Working on a Dream - is covered objectively and with curiosity. One of the best books on Springsteen I've ever read, and one of the best books on music in the ever-growing corpus.
